Great Wall of China leads Tourism Ireland's biggest ever 'Global Greening'
~ 120 icons go ‘green’ across the world ~

In a major coup for our tourism industry, over 120 of the world's most iconic landmarks turned green to mark St Patrick’s Day 2014, helping to keep the island in the global publicity spotlight and reflecting the strength of relationships with countries and communities around the world.

Leading the ‘green wave’ were UNESCO World Heritage sites – the Great Wall of China; the Treasury in the ancient city of Petra, Jordan; the Tower of Hercules in Galicia, Spain; and the Grand Place in Brussels.

They joined world-famous icons and attractions such as the London Eye, New York’s Empire State Building, Niagara Falls, Italy’s Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen, Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland® Paris and Downtown Disney® in Orlando, the Moulin Rouge became the ‘Moulin Vert’ in Paris, the Chicago River, Burj Al Arab in Dubai, the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil, Whistler ski resort in Canada, the TV Tower in Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, the Holmenkollen ski jump in Oslo, the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx in Egypt, the Spanish Monument in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the N Seoul Tower in South Korea, El Angel de la Independencia in Mexico City and even Scott Base in Antarctica – and many, many others.

Niall Gibbons, chief executive of Tourism Ireland, said: “This is the fifth year of Tourism Ireland’s Global Greening initiative and it was great to see even more well-known attractions and landmarks getting involved. St Patrick’s Day traditionally marks the real start of the tourism season for us; our aim is to bring a smile to the faces of people around the world, while showcasing our wonderful tourism experience to a huge global audience.”

“Our thanks to contacts across the world, particularly the many Ambassadors and Embassy of Ireland teams, who worked with Tourism Ireland to achieve this ‘stand-out’ for the island of Ireland”.
